Looks Great - But........

Thought I might share my experiences with you on the Soundstream in-dash single din audio/visual unit.From the outset let me say this review contains a somewhat negative remark but in NO WAY is it to be interpreted as reflecting on the seller or the quality of the system. THIS IS PURELY IN MY APPLICATION OF THE PRODUCT !!!!!!My car audio installer's are professional at their job BUT unfortunately were unable to install this unit into my 1988 Mercedes CE300.The main reason is that whilst the system unit is listed as a single din sized unit, the front exterior panel is not (the video display part of the unit). Basically it extends above the top of the system unit to the extent that when you wish to put a disc in, the tray catches on the fascia panel above the system unit.As the dash panel above is woodgrain and holds the heating controls it cannot be really trimmed for more clearance without damaging the panel and spoiling the finish of the dash. Additionally the because the system unit is cradle mounted it cannot really be pulled forward to clear the fascia above as it would leave large gaps either side as the "sides of the dash" extend away from the system unit.Yes it could be done but would look terrible and would then infringe upon the ashtray panel immediately below the system unit.SO basically I can't comment on the performance etc - extremely disappointed that I won't have it in my car but please read this as a pre-purchase warning ! Make sure you have the clearance necessary in the area you want to install this "single din" system as it is marginally larger at the front that a standard din sized CD player by virtue of the VDU component.

So far... not so good

I bought this radio at amazon and I installed it at my car a few days ago, despite of the bad reviews it has I decided to "take a leap of faith" because I wasn't willing to spend a lot of money in a radio, it fits ok in my car and the bright and quality of the screen are ok... there is a few things I don't like: Try to handle the volume without the remote control is a completely nightmare, that been said it makes you 100% dependent of the remote controller and speaking of which, the battery of the remote worked fine just for 2 days, after a couple of days I had to buy a new one (I know they are cheap, but 2 days, seriously!!!???). At last but not least, I used to play videos from the Ipod or the USB drive and sometimes when I start the car if the radio was in a middle of a video if will put an ugly green frame around the video and also it will make it looks like if quality of the video is really bad and poor, so you need to select the next or previous track to reestablish it to normal QA and size. Returning the radio isn't an option for me since I live outside of US so it will cost me more money return it than the real cost of the product, therefore I'm forced to give it a second chance.

Nice Features and Clear Sound, Poor quality

I originally purchased this radio to go in my Mercedes 32AMG and replace my factory bose radio system. I also purchased a soundstream 800.5 Rubicon amp to power my MB Quartz component 6.5" speakers. The sound was really clean, crisp, and I could fill the vehicle with a loud clean soundstage before hearing any distortion. The design of the volume control requires a circular motion and is too close to the CD eject button: which ofter causes you to eject the CD when you are trying to adjust the radio volume, which is aggrevating. I had best buy car installation do the install of this radio. The dvd player had a defect which I noticed that I could only find one DVD, Blindside, that would play in my car. When I tried to play other dvds, I would get a long pause then an error screen. I called the manufacture and they said to take out the radio and send it in: they would let me know if I had to pay anything for fixing my radio. Nevertheless, I sold this radio to a friend who didn't have a working radio in his car for $45.00 with him aware that the dvd player did not work at all. I purchased the JVC Kx-740 DVD player and it actually works. Do yourself a favor and avoid the aggrevation of the radio volume control (unless you will use the remote control that comes with the unit) and possibly the dvd defect if your experience is anything like mine and go with a better made dvd radio brand. Quality is what's lacking for this radio, but the sound is good when it works for the money.
